Regal Ulixes won a Class 2 Novice Stakes on his second and final start as a juvenile and followed up on his seasonal debut at Doncaster on June 24. He was then thought good enough to run in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. He faded quickly there and was absent for seven months after; it's likely he picked up an injury in running. He was strongly fancied on his return at Newcastle last month but ran too free and eventually finished sixth. He is down 1 lb here, and if he settles better, he could show the ability his yard clearly thinks he has.

This horse has been a huge winner for the owners who paid just £1k for him and he's now a 6 time winner and gone from a 56 rated horse in June last year to now an 87 rated horse. He continues on a real roll having won his last 3 starts, the first of which was a staggering 13L win over this CD in a 0-75 contest. Having been off the track for 69 days, he returned to today's CD 17 days ago for his toughest assignment to date and he kept the winning run going, getting up late on to score by a neck. He didn't get the easiest of runs that day so to still was and finish as strongly as he did was impressive. Up just another 2lb today and with the comeback run under his belt, I just don't see any reason why he would suddenly have reached his ceiling and I still think there's more to come from him. I'm hopeful of another big run.

This race looks a more open affair than it seems at first glance, with a few in with a chance. Kings Code is top-rated and the top weight, but he knows how to win and is getting better with age. Trainer David Evans knows how to win these decent handicaps, and this one should not be underestimated.

Hasn't won for a while but has slipped down the weights as a result and ran well when 3rd off this mark over course and distance on only his second all-weather start earlier this month. Something similar should put him bang there this afternoon.

A very difficult race to assess. Many have claims, and there are more obvious choices than DMR. However, he's more than capable in C2 races on the all-weather from his current mark. Yes, he was behind a couple of these on his comeback run, but if stepping forward from that, with the jockey taking off a useful 5 lb, he could be in the mix here. He's the value bet in this race for me, but I'd suggest looking for firms paying four places each way.
