Drops back into Class 4 company this time. Just about sneaking into this 0-120 handicap. Shouldering top weight, albeit. His sole chase win to date came off a 1 lb higher mark than this. He won a much better race than this one, beating Rare Edition (now rated 129) by just over 2 lengths. With Bad (now rated 144) a further 4 lengths away in 3rd place, and Riskintheground (now rated 140) a further 16 lengths adrift of 3rd place. He ran a solid race on his sole visit to this course. He ironically shouldered the same weight as today, running in the same grade, over hurdles, albeit. He was beaten just a neck by the winner Legionair, finishing in 2nd place. Most unlucky in defeat. That run came off a 1 lb lower mark than this. His 2nd chase run at Doncaster rates as solid form also. He finished a clear 2nd behind The Kalooki Kid, beaten 5 lengths by the easy winner, with Sea Invasion 10 lengths behind the selection in 3rd place. That form looks good with the winner winning a better race off a 7 lb higher mark. First time cheekpieces go on today..

Makes her handicap debut off bottom weight. She is switching her attention to the larger obstacles this time, having had a couple of novice hurdle outings for this yard. Admittedly, this is quite a competitive mares' handicap chase. I just can't help but think she's thrown in off this mark. The stable have also started to hit some kind of form after a torrid season so far by their own lofty standards, which adds further interest. This French-bred mare was a two-time chase winner for her former stable when trained over in France. Clearly the switch to the larger obstacles won't be an issue here. The fact her former stable also ran her in a Grade 1 and Grade 3 chase in France tells you she's not without ability. A mark of 107 seems very lenient, all things considered.

He comes into this with a bit to prove at present, having run three below-par races so far this term. Personally, I think his mark was too high to begin with this season, which was due to notching up a hat-trick of wins last term, one of which came over C&D, off a 6 lb lower mark than this. That C&D win was what sparked his winning spree, with the most recent win coming off a 4 lb higher mark than this. He won by 11 L when winning over C&D off that 6 lb lower mark, beating Rath Gaul Hill cosily, with a further 12 L gap to third-placed Snowy Evening. That form was well advertised, with the runner-up winning his next three races in succession, the most recent off a mark of 118. He drops back into Class 4 company this time. A mark of 110 looks lenient. The yard are in form at the moment; they are 2/9 with chasers at this course over the last five seasons. This is the yard's sole runner of the day.

Makes her handicap debut. Given a mark of 103. She didn't show much in her first couple of novice runs, including a no-show over CD (well beaten, 7th of 8 runners). To be fair, she was running on ground quicker than ideal. She showed something to work with on her penultimate run, running over this CD for the second time and encountering soft ground on that occasion. She was sent off an unfancied 40/1 shot but most certainly outran her odds, finishing a decent 3rd behind Ambiente Friendly, beaten just 7 lengths by the winner. She was sporting a first-time hood alongside her usual tongue tie. She ran another solid race LTO, finishing 3rd again, beaten 6 lengths by Ninna Collina. No disgrace there given the winner was completing a hat-trick of wins. This race looks winnable. We know she's got experience here and her mark looks workable. The trainer has an excellent recent record with hurdle runners at this track (26% win rate over the last 5 seasons, profitable to back those blindly).

Makes her belated chase debut. Given a lowly mark of 75. Pitched into a weak enough Class 5 handicap chase. Her career record of 1 win and 4 places from 16 runs over hurdles tells you she's not one to heavily rely on. Her sole career win did come over CD, however. She absolutely demolished the opposition when winning here over CD off a 1 lb higher mark than this. She left the runner-up Kingoftheswingerz nearly 8 L behind her. Her run at Cartmel off a 1 lb lower mark than this also rates decent form for the level. She was a very unlucky loser behind Skyjack Hijack, beaten just a neck by the winner. She ran on strongly, only just failing to reel in the winner despite still being 3 L behind him jumping the final hurdle. The winner franked the form, going on to complete a five-timer after defeating the selection. Her dam was a chase winner, so she should make a chaser herself.

Drops back in grade. Having run two fair enough races the last twice in Class 4 handicaps. He drops back to Class 5 handicap company this time. His form figures in this grade read 1-2. He's now 10 lbs below his last winning mark also. Admittedly it's been a while since his last win. He's still run well off much higher marks than this. He finished a close-up third in the North Yorkshire Grand National at this track off a mark of 113 (jockey claimed 3 lbs, so essentially 110 he ran off). Beaten just 2 lengths behind Track And Trace and Crixus's Escape. He may well have finished closer but for the mistake at the last fence. He also ran a sound race over course and distance two runs before that solid effort at the track mentioned above. He was beaten 7 lengths by the winner Some Scope, finishing fourth. That form looks well, with the winner going on to subsequently win the Rowland Meyrick off a 14 lbs higher mark (essentially 7 lbs higher with the jockey's 7 lbs claim taken into account). Any rain that falls would further aid his cause.

He's now down to the same mark he defied to win this same race last season. Admittedly, he was ridden by a 5 lb claiming jockey on that occasion. He got up to beat Choosethenews comfortably, having made virtually all the running. He was 5 L clear jumping the final flight and idled a little on the run-in, but still ran out a comfortable 2 L winner. He's only had three runs so far this term. In all three runs he finished a fair third behind Torn N Frayed in a veterans' race on reappearance, beaten 17 L by the winner. The bad mistake at the third-last fence put paid to his chances. He ran in the Grand Sefton on his penultimate run. He was struggling when being hampered and unseated his rider at the fourth-last fence. Clearly in too deep there. He ran okay after that but did weaken quickly, beaten 7 L and finishing fourth. Maybe he was still feeling the effects of the previous run. He's been given a short break since then. His form figures during the month of January read 1211.

Sits 5 lbs below his last winning mark, with Harry Skelton climbing back in the saddle for the first time this season. Admittedly he's now a teenager and clearly not a progressive horse. He also comes into this in torrid form. For me, if they are going to get another win out of him, this race looks a winnable opportunity despite the welter weight. Hence why Harry rides this time. He's 2 from 4 on this horse when he sports just cheekpieces. All career wins have come during the months of November and March. Form figures 214125 during the month of January. This is usually the time to catch him. He boasts a CD win off this exact same mark, which was also gained in the month of January with Harry Skelton onboard. He won't mind the forecast rain, with all career wins coming on soft ground.
